SMU/North Texas Preview

University of North Texas Football, tailgating, Mean Green Football
This happened....on live TV
While I'll be in Austin for an event this weekend, I'm bummed about missing the SMU/North Texas game in Denton. Apogee Stadium is outstanding and the tailgating scene there is fun.

I did a live broadcast before a game in 2012 and a group of students wanted me to join their tailgate. On live TV. The moment, as you see, was captured. That's my boss standing on the right. He might have slammed that beer once we got off the air.

Mean Green fans consider SMU a rival. This will be the 34th meeting between SMU and North Texas. The Mustangs dominate the series with a 28-4-1 record, so it's a reach to posture SMU feels the same way. This is only the third time this game has been played in Denton. North Texas won both of those games, in 1990 and in 2006. In fact, the home team has won the last 10 games in the series.

Both teams are 0-1 with Baylor blowing out SMU in the first game at McLane Stadium 45-0 and North Texas losing to Texas 38-7. SMU has never started the season 0-2 under June Jones.

Jones says he'll play two quarterbacks on Saturday. The North Texas QB combo of Josh Greer and Andrew McNulty combined to go 3 of 17 for 15 yards four interceptions against Texas. That's bad. Really bad.

North Texas fans are more casual when it comes gameday outfits. SMU fans bring it, having no shame in carrying a thousand-dollar bag with their gameday dress. Both approaches work and, when done well, look great on all fronts.
