Dirk Opting Out: Take a Chill Pill, Miss Saigon

Dirk Nowitzki can put Dallas in a panic like few men can.

In honor of Sex and the City's 2's Thursday release, I'm taking inspiration from the HBO show's second season for this one.  In the episode, "Old Dogs, New Dicks", one drag queen tells another to "Take a chill pill, Miss Saigon!" and I think that's the message Mavericks fans need to heed.

Marc Stein had this news mid-afternoon on Saturday.  I was literally walking out the door to go the HP Byron Nelson Championship when the Steiny posted the article on ESPNDallas.com.  My brother, Lance, called and texted in a panic.  My phone started exploding.

Breathe in, breathe out.  Relax.

Sources confirmed to me that Nowitzki wants to opt out of his current deal, making him an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.  In short, by doing so he would still be under the provisions of the NBA's current collective bargaining agreement.  If he extended his current contract or simply wait until it expires in 2011, he would then be under the rules of the new cba which many are predicting to be a huge game-changer for the league and its players.  There are many more specifics.  Read the article for those.

By opting out of the deal, it could also give the Mavericks the ability to create some financial freedom to add new players.  Nowitzki has always said it's about winning and he's indicated he's willing to help the team stay financially healthy.

Mavs GM Donnie Nelson is confident Nowitzki will re-sign with Dallas.

"We'll do everything in our power to ensure he stays a Maverick," Nelson told me Saturday night.  "You can count on that!!!"

Nowitzki is THE priority for the Mavericks this offseason.  That's not to say a team or two that's just won the free-agent lottery won't try to woo him with the sexiness of a talent-rich squad.  I think we're soon going to learn a little more about Nowitzki's mindset, as well.

The drama of this NBA offseason is going to be better than anything any Hollywood screenwriter could create.
