Why Yoga Pants Are Making Us Fat

Yoga pants are like a push-up bra for your butt. The right pair lifts your booty and makes you feel like you've squatted your way to a tighter tush. When you feel fat slip on a pair of Nike's Legend Slim yoga pants and you have an instant outfit that fits perfectly. And makes you look skinny, too!

There are multitude of reasons yoga pants are the perfect piece of clothing:

  • They're the ideal travel outfit.
  • They give us that "just from the gym" look. I'm an athlete, damnit!
  • You can wear them anywhere.
  • You can eat as much as you want and still fit in them. I can't tell you how many times I have worn them to a boozy brunch featuring mimosas, bloodies and a basket of bread.

BAM. There's the rub. Or the muffin top.

Yoga pants, yoga pants make you fat

Yoga pants are making us fat.

Those elastic leggings adjust as you do. It's hard to tell if you've gained a pound or twelve because day after day when you slip on your Lululemons, they fit like a glove, one that's slowly getting tighter to the point of becoming see-through.

In my former life when I lived in tight dresses every day for TV purposes, I could tell if I had packed on a few pounds. That Burberry beauty doesn't lie. If I had an indulgent weekend, I felt it on Monday.

But yoga pants, they're like that bitchy girl from high school, the one who lied and said you looked great when you really had Cheetohs cheese dust all over your face.

3 Ways To Avoid Getting Fat Wearing Yoga Pants

Spanx Workout Pants
Spanx Workout Pants - A Sneaky Fat Pill

  1. Actually workout. Yoga pants are awesome if you actually exercise in them. And if you do hit the gym, don't eat Tex-Mex and drink three Mambo Taxis while wearing them afterwards. Trust me. One bowl of queso turns to four in snap.
  2. Tight jeans. Really. If you're feeling fat or wondering if you have let the scale slide a bit too far, spend a day in your tightest pair of jeans or a form fitting dress. There's nothing like a muffin top spilling over the waistband or that "Holy crap, am I going to rip this seam?" feeling to help you get your diet back on track.
  3.  Never take off your Spanx workout pants. Yes, these gifts from the Spanx Goddess exist.
Be honest, have your yoga pants sabotaged you? Do you have another solution? PLEASE share it with me in the comments sections. I'm all ears. Namaste.

No Means NO!

How about the PR guy stealing the show and preventing ESPN Deportes reporter John Sutcliffe from interviewing Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy after Washington's stunning win over the Cowboys Monday night?

Redskins Senior VP of Communications has been around forever, working for the Cowboys, Rams and Texans prior to setting up camp in the nation's capitol.

PR people strong arm reporters all the time. In fact, McCoy's alma mater is the worst. I have been mangled by the University of Texas PR staff on multiple times while covering the Texas/OU game or other various Texas events.

Wyllie just got caught on national TV. He'll be hearing it. For a while.

Sutcliffe finally got to interview McCoy Monday night and took to Twitter to thank the former Longhorn QB.

That Sports Girl Crush: CoveRumps

coveRumps review

At a hair under 6 feet tall, I have the hardest time finding clothes that fit. My height is in my torso which means I am constantly struggling to find tops long enough to cover everything when I wear jeans or pants.

Yes, I have been that woman wearing jeans with my underwear exposed when sitting down thanks to a too-short shirt. Sorry, don't hate.

Enter coveRumps, a Kentucky-based company that solves the problem not just for the chick with the long torso but for any woman who needs a bit more coverage in the rump or simply wants to add a colorful layer to her look.

White Amelia coveRumps
Image via coverRumps.com
The cotton jersey layering piece is shaped like a small mini-skirt. You can slip it under a t-shirt to add extra length to a top, wear it over leggings when you're running around town and don't want to be too exposed or even pair it with a colorful top for a perfect gameday outfit.

coveRumps review
Wearing the black Amelia coveRump
Added bonus? It provides an extra layer of coverage underneath super-sheer t-shirts. You know the kind that expose every bulge? Yeah. coveRumps act as a nice cotton buffer without adding any bulk. I love how smooth it looks in the picture above. You barely notice the coverRump but, trust me on this, when I sit down no one will be pointing out that I'm the desperate mom with her unmentionables popping out (if you know what I mean).

coverRumps come in a variety of patterns and styles, starting at $28 per piece. You can get your coveRump monogrammed for $5.

What To Wear To A Mavs Game, 2014-15 Edition

Actual text from a friend asking me what to wear to a Mavs game.
"What should I wear to the Mavs game?"

It's a question I get asked at least once a week during the season. Dallas Mavericks games are a chance to dress up. If I am not working a game, and it's an evening tipoff, I still dress up. Mavs games are a night out, so dress the part. In addition to the whole "night out vibe", most people are coming from work and don't have time to change clothes before the game. In short: bring it.

Dallas Mavericks style guide, MFFL, MFFL Fashion, Mavs Game Night Style Guide
Click on any item to learn more about it.

Any adaptation of this look is perfect for a Mavs game this fall or winter. If it's cold, add a chic blazer or scarf. The Cole Haan booties featured are the ideal marriage of fashion and function, as they are supremely comfortable which is something to consider when walking those hard, concrete AAC floors. I lived in Cole Haan heels while working Mavs and Stars pre- and post-game shows for eight years.

Mavs season will be here before you know it. Dallas opens the regular season October 28th in San Antonio. The home opener is October 30th against the Jazz.

So Gradual Weight Loss Is No Better Than Crash Dieting?

How to lose weight and keep it off, diet news

A new Australian study publish in the The Lancet indicates that people who lose weight slowly are no more likely to keep weight off in the long run that those who crash diet.

I just want to scream "WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

And here's the thing: those who crash diet and those who adopt the slow and steady approach are all likely to gain their weight back in the long run.

This after experts, for years, said that losing weight slowly is the way to go.

No wonder we're so screwed up when it comes to weight loss.

The Science
An Australian trial recruited 200 adults assigned to a crash diet or gradual weight loss program. The slow and steady group reduced their calorie intake by around 500 calories a day for 36 weeks. The crash dieters ate between 450 and 800 calories a day for just 12 weeks.

Researchers found that those who lost weight rapidly were likelier to reach their target weight. Duh....you see the scale move, you get motivated. Read more here.

What I know
The contradictory findings when it comes to weight loss news is one of the most frustrating for anyone fighting the bulge battle or trying to maintain lifelong weight loss.

diet tips, fitness tips, healthy living tips
Me, circa 1999, close to 200 pounds
Here's the thing: do what works for you. I have lost more than 50 pounds on one occasion (in the early 2000's) and then lost the baby weight after having Jordan. Eating real food, mostly produce while truly savoring indulgent meals works for me. I never feel deprived. Ever.

There are times when restricting calories or doing a juice cleanse to jumpstart weight loss can be effective. It can serve as motivation to keep going. It has worked for me in the past.
mediterranean diet,

If you're looking for a true "diet" to follow, the Mediterranean Diet is outstanding. I also like the principles of the Greek Diet (essentially the Mediterranean) and the whole French Women Don't Get Fat thing.

At the end of the day, educate yourself and do what works for you. A common sense approach to weight loss and maintenance is truly the best way to go: eat real food, indulge occasionally, enjoy it and exercise regularly. It works.

Promise.

Click on any item to learn more about it.

If you're a college football fan, you need to learn more about Gameday Boots, the Austin-based company that is KILLING IT when it comes to gameday style.

Their boots are simply fabulous, offering them for women, men, boys and girls in both tall and short styles.
gameday boots, university of houston boots, college boots, who makes college boots
Embracing my inner Cougar....
I have worn my University of Houston boots while riding horses, which means they're durable and sturdy. I have also worn them running around town and have gotten compliments at every turn. Thing is, they're comfortable, too.

Each handcrafted pair is embroidered with your school's logo and mascot. The cool thing is, there are a variety of looks for almost every school like this stylish Texas A&M tall black pair or more traditional brown pair.

You won't just find SEC and Big 12 schools represented. North Texas? Done. They even have Southwest, excuse me, Texas State and Appalachian State in addition to behemoth universities like Michigan, Florida State and more.

These are a great gift for the holidays and the ideal way to show your support for your favorite school on gameday or any day.

The Gameday Boots Story

TCU alum Marsha Wright is the brains behind Gameday Boots. She was designing for Old Gringo boots when saw how popular embroidered boots had become. She thought it would be genius to have a college logo on a pair of boots and.....TAH-DAH.....Gameday Boots was born in 2011.

Want to get involved? Gameday Boots has a Brand Ambassador program. Learn more here.

You can buy Gameday Boots at Neiman Marcus, through a slew of retailers you can find on their website or by simply clicking on any boot featured here to purchase.

Celebrating The Icons And Essentials On National Handbag Day

October 10, 2014 marks the second straight year celebrating the accessory that millions of women (and some men) can't leave home without. PurseBlog.com created the genius marketing gimmick unofficial holiday but it has taken flight as retailers like Bloomingdale's will be celebrating.

When you think about it, the handbag is worth celebrating. It's a wonderful expression of personal style yet incredibly functional. What else can hold your makeup, work essentials, money, cell phone, wet wipes and more while adding the finishing touch to any wardrobe?

I'm a believer in investing in handbags because they can truly last a lifetime and be passed down through generations. I love my grandmother's bags and can't wait to share them with my daughter, along with some of my own collectible pieces.

National Handbag Day, Essential handbgs, mcqueen clutch, valentino rockstud crossbody, gucci handbag
Click on any item to learn more about it.

There are certain handbags every women needs in her wardrobe, what I like to call The Essentials. I couldn't live without my Gucci Swing Leather Tote or Sophie Hulme Tote. They're both outstanding bags for work and errands. While my Bottega Veneta Clutch is something that will remain stylish forever.

Handbags icons, most iconic purses, hermes birkin, hermes kelly, lady dior, gucci jackie, chanel 2.55, fendi baguette
Click on any item to learn more about it.

While The Essentials are important, The Icons are revered. From the white glove treatment, literally and figuratively, people give the Hermès Birkin to the lasting timelessness of the Chanel 2.55, these bags become a part of their owner. Not as something that defines them but as an heirloom that remains in a family for generations.

They should be considering some cost as much as a house. Case in point: Heritage Auctions sold a crocodile and white gold Hermes Birkin for $185,000 in September. That's one bangin' Birkin.

What about you?

Are you a handbag lover? What did I miss? I was on the fence about adding the Louis Vuitton Speedy to The Icon list. Should it have been included?

What's your favorite bag? Please share in the comments section!

Dallas Stars Opening Night Style Guide

what to wear to a Dallas Stars game, What to wear to a stars game
Click on any item to learn more about it.

On opening night, no matter what the league, it's time to bring it. So if you plan on going to the Dallas Stars season opener against the Blackhawks Thursday at the American Airlines Center, bring your fashion front line.

While you will see a number of fans in Stars gear, I like the idea of going with something more sophisticated. So many people attending the game will be coming directly from work, making it difficult to wear a Stars sweater.

Guys, again, have it easy. They can simply take off the workday tie and look like a million bucks at a game. For ladies, I love Stars-inspired look like the one featured with the green Equipment blouse with faux black leather Piperlime pants and accessories that show you're a Stars fan. The Madison Crossbody bag from GiGi New York, is my new gameday staple. It's so versatile and carries a ton.

We'll feature more Stars-themed gear soon but for now, dress up a bit. You get to attend a season opener only once a year, so make a statement.

How To Survive TX/OU Saturday Without A Hangover, Sunburn Or Indigestion

Bevo, TX/OU
Jordan entranced with Bevo

First off, if you're a Sooners fan, don't hate. I know this matchup is called "OU/Texas" north of the Red River. I'm a Texan. From Dallas. Deal with it.

I have no horses in this race and have actually been manhandled and accosted more times by the University of Texas PR staff more than any other individuals in my life while in the pursuit of an interview. So despite the fact my husband went to Texas and is brainwashing my daughter to head that way, I generally give the Sooners an edge.

I respect the crap out of Bob Stoops. He has always been super-nice to me after I did a story on his wife becoming a Mary Kay top producer in the early 2000's. True story: he told me he's driven her pink Cadillac to practice.

Moving on. Here's your Texas/OU gameday survival guide.

TX/OU Weekend, What You Need To Know Before You Go:
Kickoff is 11am. Parking is a bitch (map here). Try to use DART if you can. Here is the TX/OU gameday schedule.

Get there early. Traffic is always a ratf&%k getting into Fair Park on TX/OU Saturday.

cotton bowl purse policy, cotton bowl bag policy, fair park purse policy
Cotton Bowl at Fair Park Purse Policy
The Cotton Bowl has adopted a purse policy similar to AT&T Stadium's. Any of these purses will work. I also love the marriage of function and style you get with Barrington's Stadium Crossbody bag which comes in TX and OU colors GiGi New York's Madison Crossbody bag is also great for games yet stylish enough to be carried everywhere. Both the Stadium Crossbody and Madison Crossbody can be monogrammed with your initials. LOVE!

Wear sunscreen
You'll be in the sun all day. Protect yourself. Elta MD's UV Tinted Daily with SPF 40 is a phenomenal tinted sunscreen that doesn't clog your pores. If you're going to wear a full face of makeup, I like Skin Authority's sunscreen under my foundation because it's not too heavy.

Wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking. A lot.
GameDay Boots are super comfortable. They come in Texas & OU versions. Yosi Samra ballet flats are also ideal for long days of walking. Yosi Samra even has some in Texas burnt orange and OU crimson. Guys have it so easy. They can wear anything.

Fletchers Corny Dog, 2014 State Fair of Texas
Image via Twitter.com/FletchersDogs
Caffeinate and pace yourself
Drink coffee in the morning to wake up and get going but don't eat much for breakfast, if anything at all. It will be a long day. You'll be eating Fletcher's Corny Dogs at 10am and who knows what other fried fat bombs. Pace yourself on the food front. Enjoy anything you want but don't do it all in one sitting (or standing). The result is never pretty.

Hydrate
Drink plenty of water so you're not wasted by 6pm. Half the fun of TX/OU weekend is the action all over Uptown on Saturday night. Don't get too tipsy. Use a cab or Uber if you fear DART after dark.

Most importantly, have fun.
Enjoy every minute of it if you're going to game. It's one of the best experiences in college football. Click here for information on more TX/OU revelry throughout the weekend. One of my favorite traditions is a TX/OU party at Fair park at 8am on Saturday followed by my once-yearly date with Snuffer's cheese fries on Sunday afternoon. It might my secret hangover cure. Might.....

Are you going to the game or to the fair on Saturday? Prediction? Are you more focused on another game? (Baylor/TCU, anyone?)

The Best Online Outlet Stores That Will Make Your Shopping Pants Go Crazy

Shopping at outlet malls is a passion of mine. It's truly a treasure hunt. A day at an outlet mall can yield a booty full of designer goods for less while other days it can produce a big fat bag of nothing.

Gucci outlet, Gucci bracelet, Gucci scarf
Gucci bracelet and scarf purchased at the Gucci outlet in San Marcos

Some of my favorite outlet finds include a Gucci scarf and bracelet from the San Marcos Gucci outlet, Prada shoes from the San Marcos Prada outlet and a YSL Muse bag from Last Call in Allen that has seen better days.

You don't have to slog to outlet stores in remote locations to score designer finds. Although if you do get the chance to visit the Prada or Gucci outlets (whether they're the ones in Florence, Italy or San Marcos, TX) go!

Thing is, a lot of these outlets have an online presence. In general, the offerings aren't as "boutique-y" as in the stores but you can still score some good merchandise for less.

Here is a round up of the best online outlets:
What are your favorite outlet sites? Please share them in the comments section.

Alright Alright Alright: Matthew McConaughey Visits Texas Practice

You gotta love Matthew McConaughey. He gives the Texas football team a pep talk in a way only he can with textbook McConaugh-speak.

Courtesy YouTube.com/LonghornNetwork

He even took a few questions and we find out that his favorite movie he ever made was the 2012 coming of age flick Mud.  Good movie but I'm partial to Magic Mike (Of course I am). Sadly, he's not slated to be in the sequel.

I'm also digging his Texas Longhorns raglan shirt. I can't find the exact one he's wearing but did find a similar short sleeve one.

What's your favorite McConaughey performance? There are so many to choose from: True Detective, Dallas Buyer's Club. Share your favorite in the comments section.
