When you're a former fat girl like me, you're always interested in diet news. U.S. News & World Report's diet rankings are out for 2015 and once again the DASH Diet tops the list. The DASH Diet which stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, (Tweet this) was designed to combat high blood pressure but it gets high marks for its nutritional value and ability to prevent and/or control diabetes. Weight loss is a nice side effect.

UPDATED: The Best Diets of 2016 - DASH Does It Again!

Here are the top five diets for 2015:

  1. The DASH Diet - lots of grains and vegetables, lean protein in moderation, fruit for dessert. Here is a comprehensive PDF detailing the DASH Diet. You don't hear a ton about it because it's kind of boring. It's not sexy like the 17-Day Diet or trendy like the Paleo Diet. It's simple and it works.
  2. The TLC Diet - the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes Diet was created by the National Institute of Health. It involves lots of produce and lean protein.
  3. The Mayo Clinic Diet - no calorie counting, unlimited fruits and vegetables. No food group is off limits. This two-phase diet focuses on helping you establish a healthy eating pattern for life.
  4. The Mediterranean Diet (my personal favorite) - this diet is low in sugar, red meat and saturated fats and heavy on produce, nut, fish, olive oils and wine (hello!). Dairy, eggs, cheese and yogurt are consumed in moderation.
  5. Weight Watchers - you can eat whatever you want as long as you stick within a certain points system. Most fruits and vegetables contain zero points, so you can eat as much of those you want.

I say if you find an eating plan that works for you - stick with it. The tenets of most diets are the same: eat a lot of produce and lean protein. Limit processed food and saturated fat. That's a proven recipe for diet success.

  1. I've done Weight Watchers before and I liked it. You only need to count certain types of foods. Things that are highly processed or junk food. So if you stick to fruits, veggies, whole grains you can eat as much as you want without counting. It's great. I lost some weight on it but it can get expensive. I've never done any of the others. I've heard the Mediterranean Diet is good though.

    1. The Med is my favorite, Valerie. It's just a smart, sensible approach to eating, IMO that anyone can do. AND includes wine & chocolate. :)

    1. A lot if people don't know anything about the DASH diet. It doesn't get a lot of publicity. My vote: the Med Diet is the way to go, both on vacation and in life! :)
